HP Dawn Night
Chapter 46 Another Year in Diagon Alley
There are some subtle similarities and differences between life at 19 Spinner's End and life at Watson Manor. In Spider's End, you can't expect house-elves to attend to your daily life, nor can you look out at the sparkling lake from your home.
Spider's End doesn't have as many amazing magical items, like talking mirrors and alarm clocks, nor does it have as many ornate decorations (which both me and Draco were very uncomfortable with for a while).
But daily study is essential. My father even emphasizes the importance of "practice" more than my mother. We spend half a day doing homework and reading, and then spending half a day preparing potions in the basement or practicing in an empty room curse.
But for me, Spider's End might mean the presence of a playmate.
"That's great!" Draco said after I finished a joke, "Why aren't you my sister? You know I was lonely when I was a kid, well, you know what I mean..."
"Actually, I don't think 'Draco Snape' is a nice name, although I'd love to have a cute sibling," I said.
Draco shook his head again and again: "But 'Violet Malfoy' sounds good."
—At the breakfast table today, we received a letter from Hogwarts.Draco and I both got a yellow parchment envelope with green writing on it.
"It appears the school knows exactly where we are."
I nodded as I opened the envelope and found the book list.
"Who is Gilderoy Lockhart?" I shook the list in my hand. In fact, we will buy seven books by Gilderoy Lockhart this year!
Draco shook his head, "I don't know."
Just then my father walked in, and he seemed in a good mood.
"Is Lockhart the new Defense Against the Dark Arts professor this year?" My father took the list of books from me and replied:
"Ah... yes." The father showed a disgusted expression almost without looking at it, "I sincerely hope that Dumbledore will regret it, and I hope you are mentally prepared-don't expect to be in this year's class." What did you learn in school?"
Draco and I looked at each other, at this moment, I heard my father say from the side:
"Draco, as far as I know, your parents plan to take you home this afternoon." He looked at me again, "Your mother will be back from France this evening, you understand?"
I nodded, and my father left in a hurry after saying this.
"Looks like the godfather is busy," Draco said thoughtfully.
"Perhaps in preparation for the start of school." I coped, asking, "Who do you think the Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher will be this year? A Lockhart admirer?"
Draco was not interested at all: "I don't know anything about this guy. But Vio, you're going to go to Diagon Alley with me, right?"
"No surprises—yes," I promised.
"Where's Pansy?"
I think of Pansy's last letter to me: "She's gone to Edinburgh for her cousin's wedding and won't be back until school starts."
"What a pity," said Draco, "I'll write to tell you when I get back to Diagon Alley as soon as I get home."
"Oh please! Please don't run into Potter again." I laughed.
Draco kept his word, and wrote me that very evening to tell me that Wednesday was the time to go to Diagon Alley.
I haven't seen her for a month, and my mother has been very fond of me recently, and she can almost be said to be responsive. I once wondered if she was stimulated by something in France... But my mother has a good reason for this, she said, It's all because I'm going to Hogwarts again soon, and she'll miss me if we don't see each other for a long time.
Wait, long time no see?
"The French Wizarding Potions Association invited me to take part in a study, so you'll have to stay at school this Christmas," Mom explained to me apologetically.I have no objection to this:
"Then you have to wait until the next summer vacation to see me?" I wanted to cry but had no tears.
"True, but Severus will take care of you at Hogwarts, so I'm not particularly worried," said Mom flatly.
I don't know if I should tell her the truth.
"Write to me every week. Don't forget my Christmas and birthday presents," I demanded.
"Those are fine," Mom said, handing me a slice of my favorite apple pie.
But I'm still glum.
"Be happy, Vio, maybe we can take a trip to France on your next summer vacation, you'll love it there." Mom tried to tease me.
"Perhaps," I said, suddenly reminded of an important question, "Do you know who Gilderoy Lockhart is?"
Mom frowned slightly: "He has written many books and is said to have several honorary titles. He sounds like a very powerful person. In addition, he also wants to promote his full line of hairdressing products."
I seem to understand something.
"This year's list is full of Lockhart books," I said.
Mom didn't seem interested in him, and she soon started asking me what I'd learned in Spinner's End.
I play it by ear and ask if it is possible to increase the time to play on the broomstick before dinner. I wonder if it has touched the past of my youth, but my mother readily agreed.
Soon it will be Wednesday.
"Mom, can I have a new robe?"
My mother brought me back from France this time a beautiful blue forget-me-not robe, which is said to have been designed and sewed by her friend—a founder of a well-known wizard brand. It's bright and crisp, with silver graphics and a little lace trim, and it fits perfectly.
"Of course," said my mother, leading me into her room, "but since I'm wearing this gown, I'll have to dress up a bit."
The dress up in my mother's mouth is to change my hairstyle, but in fact, it is just a blue ribbon to tie up my hair.
"I thought you were going to use a bunch of beauty products on me," I stroked my hair, which looked fine, "Pansy's already watching Playwitch."
"Believe me, as my daughter, when you are old enough to go to the ball, I will give you my life's knowledge in beauty magic." Mom asked curiously while helping me straighten my clothes, " What kind of magazines does Mrs. Parkinson allow Pansy to read?"
I shook my head. "Pencey ordered it with her pocket money."
Mom didn't answer.
