Harry Potter and the Way of Reason

Chapter 94: Characters, Part 5

First meeting:

At 1992:4 a.m. on April 17, 6, when viewed from Hogwarts Castle, the sun had just risen from the horizon, casting soft light through the drawn curtains of the Ravenclaw first-year male dormitory, covering the The white fabric on the windows did little to alter the orange light of dawn from waking the boys accustomed to their winter routine.

In one of the many beds, Harry Potter was asleep, exhausted.

The door opened quietly.

A figure quietly walked across the floor.

The figure came to Harry Potter's bedside.

The figure put one hand on the sleeping boy's shoulder, and the boy was startled and screamed.

No one else heard it.

"Mr Potter," the little man squealed, "the headmaster wants you to see him at once."

Slowly the boy sat up on the bed, his fingers groping under the sheets for a while. He had expected to wake up feeling worse in the morning. It felt... so wrong, his brain was working now, his mind was still working, he hadn't been crying helplessly for at least a week. The boy knew that this was not the state the brain could evolve to with adaptive responses[i].His dark side certainly wouldn't do that either.Even so, being alive and awake this morning still didn't feel right.

But his determination to revive Hermione Granger still felt—full, as if he had set out to do the right thing, set his mind on the right path, and she would be brought back, that's all; grief would be lay down.No more decisions to be made, no ambiguities, no conflicts to tear him apart, no need to remember that he saw—

"I'll change right now," said Harry.

Professor Flitwick looked rather reluctant, but said sharply, "The Headmaster specifically ordered you to be taken straight to his office without a pause, Mr Potter. I'm sorry."

Less than a minute later - and Professor Flitwick had sent him directly to the Headmaster's office via Hogwarts' internal Floo network - Harry found himself still in his pajamas, facing Albus Dumbledore. The Vice-Headmaster sat in another chair, and the Potions Master lurked nearby, hidden among a tangle of odd gadgets, Harry just in time to catch him yawning as he emerged from the fireplace.

"Harry," the headmaster asked directly, "before I say what I have to say next, I want to tell you that Hermione Granger is indeed dead. The enchantment was recorded and informed me. Those stones said a The witch is dead. I examined her body lying there, and it is indeed Hermione Granger's real body, not a puppet or something. There is no known witchcraft that can reverse death. Said So much so that Hermione Granger's body is now missing from the storeroom where you guarded it. Did you take the body with you, Harry Potter?"

"No," Harry said, narrowing his eyes, and out of the corner of his eye he saw Severus watching him intently.

Dumbledore's gaze was equally sharp, but not unfriendly. "Do you have Hermione Granger's body?"

"No."

"Do you know where it is?"

"do not know."

"Do you know who took it away?"

"No idea," said Harry, then hesitated, "except for obvious guesses of probability not based on my specific knowledge."

The old wizard nodded, "Do you know why you were taken away?"

"No idea. Other than obvious guesswork."

"What are the guesses?" The ancient eyes were very sharp.

"If the enemy can notice that after Hermione was arrested, you went to consult the Weasley twins during their class, and found you talking about the stolen magic map, then the enemy may want to know why I should guard Hermione. Min Granger's body. It's my turn. Did you arrange Hermione's death in order to get the money back from Lucius?"

"What?" said Professor McGonagall.

"No," said the old wizard.

"Did you know or guessed that Hermione Granger would die?"

"I don't know. For speculation, I did my best to protect her from Voldemort. I didn't want her to die, didn't let her die, and didn't intend to benefit from her death, Harry Potter. Now Show me your bag."

"In my trunk -" said Harry.

"Severus," said the elderly wizard, and the Potions Master stepped forward, "check his chest too, every compartment."

"My box has an enchantment."

Severus Snape grinned grimly, then strode into the green flames.

Dumbledore took out his long, dark gray wand, and started waving it around Harry's hair, looking like a Muggle using a metal detector.Dumbledore stopped before examining Harry's neck.

"The jewel in your ring," said Dumbledore, "is no longer clear. It is brown now, the color of Hermione Granger's eyes and hair."

The atmosphere in the room suddenly tensed.

"That's my dad's rock," said Harry, "transformed just like it used to be, and I did it in honor of Hermione—"

"I must be sure. Take the ring off, Harry, and put it on my table."

Slowly, Harry did so, removing the stone and taking off the ring and placing it on the other side of the table.

Dumbledore tapped the gem with his wand, and—

Under the sudden action of the expansion force, a huge ordinary stone appeared in midair, touched the invisible barrier in the air, and then made a loud noise and fell on the principal's desk.

"I'll spend another half an hour to transform it again." Harry said flatly.

Dumbledore continued his examination.Harry had to take off his left shoe and the toe ring, which was his emergency Portkey in case someone kidnapped him outside the Hogwarts enclosure (and there was no anti-ghost, anti-ghost). Portkey, Anti-Phoenix, Anti-Time Loop Ward, Severus warned Harry, any high-level Death Eater would do it).It has been confirmed that the magic ray emitted by the toe ring is indeed from the Portkey and not from Transfiguration. The rest of Harry passed the inspection.

Not long after that, the Potions Master came back with Harry's bag and other magical items that were originally in Harry's box. The headmaster went through them one by one. miss.

"Can I go now?" said Harry when it was all over, trying to be as grim as possible. He picked up the bag and started feeding gray stones into it.The empty ring was back on his finger.

The old wizard let out a breath and slipped his wand back into his sleeve. "I'm sorry," he said, "I need to know. Harry... it appears that the Dark Lord has taken Hermione Granger's body. Become an Inferi against you. Severus will give you a specific potion to protect you. Now be alert, ready, and do what you must, when you must."

"Does Inferi have Hermione's mind?"

"Do not--"

"Then it's not her. Can I go? At least change out of my pajamas."

"One more piece of news, I'll be brief. According to the Hogwarts enchantment records, no outsiders entered, and it was the Defense Professor who killed Hermione Granger."

"Yeah," said Harry.

Thought [-]: But I saw the troll kill Hermione.

Idea [-]: Professor Quirrell tampered with my memory, and then arranged the scene that the principal saw when he came.

Idea [-]: Professor Quirrell can't do it, his magic touches my magic, I saw it in Azkaban——

Thought [-]: Can I trust those memories?

Thought [-]: There must be some kind of chaos in Azkaban, if Professor Quirrell hadn't been in a coma we wouldn't need rockets, why would he be in a coma, if not—

Thought Six: Have I Really Been to Azkaban?

Thought #[-]: Apparently I practiced controlling a dementor at some point, before I scared off the Wizengamot's dementor. And that was in the papers.

Thought Eight: Do I remember the newspaper exactly?

"Well," said Harry again, "that spell should really be in the Unforgivable category. You think Professor Quirrell may have tampered with memories—"

"No. I went back in time and placed a specific device to record Hermione's last battle. I couldn't bear to watch it myself," the old wizard looked serious, "Your guess is correct, Harry Potter. Voldemort destroyed everything we gave Hermione to protect her. Her broom didn't respond to her hand. Her invisibility cloak couldn't hide her. Trolls walked in the sun unharmed; An accidental creature, but a purely targeted weapon. And indeed the troll killed her, by strength alone, so my detection of malicious magic enchantments and nets are useless. The defense professor has never met to her."

Harry swallowed, closed his eyes, and thought, "So this is deliberately framing Professor Quirrell. Somehow. Looks like a common trick of the enemy. The troll ate Hermione Granger, check the enchantment, Oh it does look like the Defense Professor did it, same as last year... no. No, that can't be right."

"Why not, Mr Potter?" said the Potions Master, "it's obvious to me—"

"That's exactly the problem."

Enemies are smart.

Slowly Harry's sleepiness dissipated, and after a full night's sleep his brain was able to see things that hadn't been apparent yesterday.

Under standard literary conventions... the enemy shouldn't have seen what you did, destroyed the magic item you provided, and then released a troll that was somehow made undetectable, and the heroes thought about it even after the fact What method is not used, so that you have no defense. In books the point of view is usually that of the main character. To have enemies plotting their actions outside of the literary lens, ultimately bypassing all of the hero's work, is a diabolism[2] and dramatically unsatisfying.

But in real life, the enemy thinks they're the protagonists, and they're smart enough to think ahead, even if you don't see them think. That's why everything feels so disconnected, with unexplained, seemingly inexplicable parts. How did Lucius feel when Harry threatened Dumbledore to break into Azkaban? How did the Aurors of Azkaban feel when they saw their broomsticks fly upwards with a cloud of flame?

Enemies are smart.

"The enemy is fully aware that you will go back in time to see what happened to Hermione, especially since the troll broke into Hogwarts will show us that someone can fool the enchantment." Harry closed his eyes, Think hard, try to put yourself in the enemy's shoes. Why did he, or his dark side, do something like—"The enemy wants us to conclude that they can control what the ward tells us. But that's actually very difficult for the enemy to do, or in some way under certain conditions; they're trying to create the illusion of omnipotence." Just like I would, too." Then, let's say, the enchantment shows that Professor Sinistra killed someone. We think the enchantment Fooled again, but in reality, Professor Sinistra was insane, and she actually killed people."

"Unless that's what the Dark Lord expects us to think," said Severus Snape, his brows knit together, "in which case he controls the ward and Professor Sinistra would be innocent .”

"The Dark Lord does use so many layers of stratagem—"

"Yes." said Dumbledore and Severus.

Harry nodded faintly, "Then it could be a deception, either making us think the enchantment is telling the truth when it's actually lying, or making us think the enchantment is lying when it's actually telling the truth, it depends. to the extent that the enemy wants us to reason. But if the enemy is going to make us believe in the enchantment - we will believe in the enchantment anyway, if we have no reason not to believe it. So, there is no need to go to such lengths to frame Professor Quirrell, And in such a way that we realize we've been led to discover, just to trick us into layers—"

"That's not true," said Dumbledore. "If Voldemort didn't fully master the Ward, then the Ward would have to believe that the actions were at the hands of a professor. Otherwise they'd make a noise when Miss Granger was hurt, and Not when she died."

Harry reached up and rubbed his eyebrows beneath his hair.

Okay, serious question. If the enemy is so smart, why the hell am I still alive? Is it really that hard to poison someone, are there spells, potions or bezoars that can cure literally anything thrown into my breakfast? Will the enchantment record it, track the murderer's magic?

Does my scar contain soul fragments that allow the Dark Lord to connect to this world, so he doesn't want to kill me now?He instead tries to drive away all my friends to weaken my soul so he can occupy my body? This would explain Parseltongue. The Sorting Hat may not be able to detect things like the Lich's Phylactery[3].Obvious problem 1, the Dark Lord should have made his Lich Phylactery in 1943, by murdering her, I can't remember her name, and then framed Mr. Hagrid.Obvious problem 2, there is no such thing as a soul.

But Dumbledore also thought that my blood was an important element in the Dark Lord's sacrifice to restore his full powers, and that I needed to survive the ceremony... which is now a pleasant thought.

"Well..." said Harry, "I can confirm one thing."

"What is it?"

"Neville needs to be taken out of Hogwarts immediately. He is the obvious next target, and no first-year student will survive an attack of this level. We are lucky that Neville was not assassinated yesterday evening, and the enemy did not have to wait." Let's move on after we mourn." Why didn't the enemy attack when we were distracted?

Dumbledore and Severus exchanged glances, and then Professor McGonagall suddenly looked nervous. "Harry," said the old wizard, "if you sent all your friends away, it would be the same as Voldemort..."

"I'll do just fine without Neville for the next few months. It's not like you're planning to keep my friends here for the summer and there's no good enough reason for him to die! Professor McGonagall—"

"I quite agree," said the witch with a Scottish accent. She frowned. "Very agree. Agree to the point... how should I put it, Albus..."

"Agreed enough that you'd drag him out of the school yourself, regardless of what anyone else said. Because 'just following orders' wouldn't be a good excuse if Neville died?" said Harry.

Professor McGonagall closed her eyes briefly. "Yes, but there must be some way to hold people accountable without the threat of unilateral action."

The principal sighed. "No need. Go ahead, Minerva."

"Wait," said the Potions Master, as Professor McGonagall, moving quite briskly, pinched a little green powder from a Floo powder jar, "we shouldn't call attention to that boy any more than the headmaster drew attention to Wee Attention the Sly twins. If Mr. Longbottom's grandmother took him from Hogwarts, I think it would have been wiser. Keep him in the common room for now; the Dark Lord doesn't seem to be able to act so openly."

The four exchanged glances for a long time, and finally Harry nodded, and then Professor McGonagall.

"In that case," said Harry, "I've made sure of one other thing."

"What is it?" said Dumbledore.

"I really need to visit the bathroom, and I need to change my pajamas."

------------------------------------------------

"By the way," said Harry, as he and the Headmaster entered the empty Ravenclaw office via the Floo network, "one last quick question I just wanted to ask you. The sword that came out, that's the Gryffindor sword, isn't it?"

The old wizard turned, expressionless, "What makes you think that, Harry?"

"The Sorting Hat shouts Gryffindor! Just before falling out of the sword, the scabbard is set with rubies, the blade is engraved with gold letters, and the Latin inscription says there is no better. Just guessing."

"Nihilsupernum," said the old wizard, "doesn't really mean that."

Harry nodded, "Well, what are you going to do with it?"

"I got it from where it fell, and put it in a safe place," said the old wizard. He gave Harry a stern look. "I hope you won't be greedy for it, young Ravenclaw."

"Not at all, just to make sure you're not hiding it forever from the right user. So the Weasley twins are heirs of Gryffindor?"

"Heir of Gryffindor?" said Dumbledore, looking surprised. Then the old wizard smiled, his blue eyes blinking happily, "Ah, Harry, Salazar Slytherin may have set up a Chamber of Secrets at Hogwarts, but Godric Gryffindor Dow would not have gone so far. All we have seen is Godric leaving his sword behind to guard Hogwarts if a trustworthy student encounters an enemy they cannot defeat alone."

"That's not the same thing as denial. Don't think I didn't notice you didn't actually deny it."

"I didn't live in that era, Harry, and I don't know if Godric Gryffindor ever—"

"Have you actually assigned more than 50% subjective probability that there is such a thing as a Gryffindor heir, and either or both of the Weasley twins are heirs. Yes, or no, avoidance means yes .You can't succeed in diverting my attention, no matter how much I want to go to the bathroom."

The old wizard sighed, "Yes, Fred and George Weasley are the heirs of Gryffindor. I beg you not to tell them that it is not yet time."

Harry nodded and turned to leave. "I'm surprised," said Harry, "I've read a bit about Godric Gryffindor's life. The Weasley twins... well, they're wonderful in many ways, but they're nothing like the history books. It's not quite the same as Godric in the movie."

"Only the most proud and vain man," said Dumbledore quietly, turning to the Floo web, once again bursting into green flames, "would believe that his offspring would be like himself, and not as he wished he could be." become the person."

The principal stepped into the green flame and left.

Second meeting: (in a small room in the Hufflepuff common room)

Neville Longbottom spoke into the empty air, his face wrinkled in pain.

"Seriously," Void responded, "I'm wearing an invisibility cloak with extra anti-detection magic in order to walk through the corridors, just because I don't want to be killed. If the headmaster allows it, my parents will take me out of Hoag immediately Watts. Neville, it's common sense for you to leave Hogwarts for me, it's not about—"

"I betrayed you, General," said Neville, his voice as hollow as any normal 11-year-old boy could try to control, "and I didn't even betray you in the way of the Legion of Chaos. I obeyed authority, then tried to Let you also obey authority. What do you often say, in the Chaos Legion, a soldier who can only obey orders is useless?"

"Neville," Void said firmly.Under the thin clothes, the pressure of both hands was firmly exerted on Neville's shoulders; the voice got closer to him, "You are not blindly obeying authority, you are trying to protect me. Indeed, in this chaotic world, only A soldier who obeys the rules and regulations is worthless. But a soldier who obeys the rules in order to protect his friends is—”

"Better than worthless?" Neville said bitterly.

"Much better than worthless[4]. Neville, you misjudged. It cost me about 6 seconds. Maybe because Hermione's injury happened to be almost fatal in those 6 seconds, but even so, I don't think 6 Seconds is really enough time for the troll to bite Hermione one more time. In a virtual world where you didn't step up in my way, Hermione is still dead. Now I can stand here and list the first dozen if I don't make stupid Hermione Min will live the way—”

"You? You ran right after her. I was the one who tried to stop you. If it was anyone's fault, it was mine," said Neville bitterly.

This time the void was silent for a while.

"Wow," Void finally said, "Wow. I gotta say, that's a pretty different way of looking at things. I'll think about that next time I have the urge to blame myself for something. Nah Well, there's a term in the literature to describe this, it's called an 'egocentric bias', meaning, you experience everything in your own life, but you don't experience everything else that's going on in the world. What's going on at the time is far more than you This one stood in my way. I bet you would spend weeks constantly recalling what you did in those 6 seconds, but no one else bothered thinking about it. Others spent far less time thinking about it than you did your past mistakes because you were not the center of their world. I assure you that no one but you has even considered blaming Neville Longbottom for what happened to Hermione, not even for a moment. You What a, with all due respect, little fool. Shut up now and say goodbye."

"I don't want to say goodbye," said Neville. His voice trembled, but he managed not to cry. "I want to be here, to fight with you, against— against whatever is going on right now."

The Void moved closer to him, gave him a hug, and Harry Potter's voice whispered, "Bad luck."
