Chapter 2 Dadaism

On the huge LED billboard of the Qingnan Art Center, the words "Art Against Art: Dadaist Works Exhibition" are particularly eye-catching.

When Jiang Chan followed the instructions and entered the venue, the media ceremony was over, and the invited guests began to watch the exhibition one after another. There are two halls in this exhibition. The first hall displays paintings, and the second hall displays sculptures. Jiang Chan didn't have any special preferences, so he followed an old man with a magnifying glass and entered the door on the left.

Dadaism emerged at the beginning of the 20th century and is a literary school born of anarchist political thought in the field of art.Its advocates advocate anti-tradition, anti-conventional, and anti-meaning, but just like the contradiction between deconstruction and construction, Dadaism’s opposition to art still manifests as an art in the end.

The works of Dadaism are characterized by absurdity, chaos, and nothingness. When settled in paintings, they present distorted, weird, and even gloomy images, such as mutilated human bodies.

Jiang Chan is a complete layman when it comes to art, and he didn't even notice the beauty after looking at a few of them. In addition, he was inattentive, always paying attention to the people passing behind him, so he turned around and gained nothing.

When he was about to go to the sculpture exhibition hall, he finally met Ning Zhi.

Ning Zhi supported an old man with gray hair, and was explaining something in his ear.The old man was very satisfied after hearing this, and patted him on the shoulder with a smile.

Jiang Chan stood ten meters away, watching them silently.

Ning Zhi was wearing an off-white casual suit. He was thin and tall, like a male high school student in his early years. Because the old man was deaf, he kept bending over to talk, and his fluffy hair brushed against the other's cheekbones.

Jiang Chan knew what it felt like, itchy and soft. And Ning Zhi's hair is also very fragrant, exuding a refreshing lemon smell.

Not long after, a well-dressed woman joined the conversation, and the three of them chatted and laughed for a while. The woman led the old man into the sculpture hall. Ning Zhi looked up and saw Jiang Chan, and walked towards him.

"When did you arrive?"

"Just arrived." Jiang Chan asked him, "Are you busy now?"

"not busy."

"Then," Jiang Chan pointed to the oil paintings in the exhibition hall, "explain it?"

Ning Zhi smiled, his eyes bright and sly: "I will charge you."

"Aren't you a staff member of the organizer?"

"Then what happened?"

Jiang Chan said, "I will complain to you."

Ning Zhi let out a "tch" and didn't take his threat seriously at all, but he accompanied Jiang Chan to visit again, asking as he walked, "Do you know anything about Dadaism?"

Jiang Chan answered honestly, "Duchamp."

Ning Zhi laughed again: "That's a little understanding."

They walked slowly along the exhibition line, talking in a low voice in order not to disturb other guests. This is not enough, you must be very close to hear the content of the other party's words.

Ning Zhi started from the social environment in Europe after World War I, and introduced the meaning of "Dada", the literary group founded by Tristan Chara, the representative works of Max Ernst, and the ready-made art of Marcel Duchamp .

"Do you know Duchamp's famous work "Fountain"?" Ning Zhi asked excitedly. He was completely immersed in the things he loved, and his whole body was in high spirits, as if glowing.

Jiang Chan cooperated with him, obediently being a student eager for knowledge: "Is that the urinal?"

"Yes, it's the urinal!" Ning Zhi gave him an approving look.

Jiang Chan secretly laughed in his heart, and asked, "Did you borrow it?"

"No, that one is very difficult to borrow. But we have borrowed a few paintings by Duchamp, and other famous works of Dadaists, Ernst, Hannah Hirsch, Picabia, etc."

Ning Zhi led Jiang Chan to admire famous paintings such as "Nude Descending the Staircase (No. 1)", "Napoleon in the Wilderness", "Chinese Nightingale", "Dada Composition" and other famous paintings, and then took him to the sculpture hall to see Many weird and incomplete works.

Towards the end of the visit, a white wall suddenly appeared, blocking the way. On the wall, printed in huge black bold letters, was a manifesto drafted by Tristan Chara for Dadaism:

Freedom: Dada, Dada, Dada, this is the howl of unbearable pain, this is the interweaving of all kinds of constraints, contradictions, absurd things and illogical things; this is life.

The two stood silently, feeling a surge of impact that spanned time and space together.

After a long time, Ning Zhi asked softly: "How is it? Today's exhibition."

"It's shocking," Jiang Chan grabbed Ning Zhi's shoulders, pushed him gently, and motioned him to go outside, and when he left the exhibition hall and was bathed in the sun again, he said, "But I can't empathize. Because I don't Thinking that life is nothingness, for me, life has meaning.”

Ning Zhi didn't immediately respond to Jiang Chan's high-spirited talk, but showed a contemplative look.Jiang Chan looked at him up close, and found that Ning Zhi's face was really small, and he could cover it with a single slap. Not only his face, but also his nose and lips are small and delicate, only a pair of eyes are big and kind, like pebbles in a clear pool.

Jiang Chan said, "I misunderstood Dadaism, right?"

"No, art is inherently open and inclusive, allowing various interpretations." Ning Zhi smiled freely, "And I think you are right."

They walked across the lawn until they reached the gate of Qingnan Art Center.Apart from today's exhibition, there seems to be no other topic to talk about, but if I talk too much, it becomes boring and unfriendly. Therefore, as soon as Ning Zhi saw the Porsche parked by the side of the road, he happily pointed it out to Jiang Confessor, "Here's a sports car."

"Well," Jiang Chan asked, "You like it?"

"I like it but I can't afford it." Ning Zhi sighed regretfully.

As soon as he finished feeling, Jiang Chan silently took out the car keys: "Sit?"
