Chapter 51 Fear of Failure
Just as Markles' voice faded away in the narrow classroom, Gerling's phone started beeping. He took out his phone and saw the name of the college flashing on the screen. His heart tightened, knowing that this was definitely not a simple notification.
"What's wrong, Gerlin?" Markles turned sideways with a hint of worry in his eyes.
"A message from the academy." Gerling's voice trembled slightly. His finger paused on the screen for a moment, as if he was thinking about how to phrase it. "It seems that they have made some new discoveries about the results of the last experiment."
"New discovery?" Markles frowned, stood up straight, and his eyes became serious. He walked to Gerlin's side, eager to know the content. "Take a look, what is it?"
Gerling took a deep breath and clicked on the message. A few lines flashed on the screen: "Based on the latest experimental data, we suspect that there is a serious deviation from the previous conclusion." He raised his head and looked at Markles, his tone became serious: "They think that we may need to re-examine our research methods."
"Re-examine? What does that mean?" Markles clenched his fists and lowered his voice. His face quickly turned gloomy, confusion and anger intertwined. "Do we have to overturn every experiment we worked so hard on?"
Gerling gritted his teeth silently and tried to keep his tone calm: "It doesn't necessarily mean they want to overturn it, but they need more data to support it. Maybe they hope we can provide new experimental samples."
"New experimental samples?" Markles said in a lost voice, "We have spent several months on this project. Don't they understand our hard work?"
"I know this is very unfair, but it's part of scientific research," Gerling said, trying to comfort Markles. "We can't be too emotionally invested in research results. We have to abide by higher academic standards."
"But these standards are sometimes too harsh!" Markles clutched his phone, indignant. "I will discuss this with the dean and let him understand our efforts."
"That may not be helpful." Gelling sighed, his eyes half believing and half doubting. "In the scientific world, the results are the final judge. Emotions and efforts will not change the facts of the data."
A silence spread between the two. The sound of rain outside the window seemed to sigh for their predicament. Gerlin could feel the inner struggle of Markles, and his heart became more and more anxious.
"Why do we always run into this kind of trouble every time we are close to success?" Markles said in a low voice, "Is fate really playing a joke on us?"
"Maybe it's an isolated incident," Gerling tried to comfort. "You know, the competition in the scientific community is extremely fierce, and everyone is vying to verify their own theories. We can't be impatient."
"I don't want to postpone it any longer." Markles suddenly raised his voice and his eyes became firm. "I'm going to act immediately and start a new experiment right away."
“Are you sure?” Gerling hesitated. “This may take more time and money, and the college may not approve it immediately.”
"We can't wait for their approval!" Markles' eyes flashed with determination, "I will make all the preparations I can and collect data first. Once we are done, we will submit the application to the college."
"I support you, but this is really risky." Gerling felt a pressure, an urge to take on new challenges, and he understood that any research must be supported by solid data.
"Adventure is part of science." Markles smiled, with a spark of anticipation in his eyes. "Sometimes, we have to break through the existing framework to make new discoveries."
The classroom door was pushed open, and the professor appeared at the door. He looked around and his eyes fell on the two people who were talking in a low voice. "What are you discussing?"
"We are studying the results of the last experiment, professor." Markles stood up quickly and tried to make his tone sound calm. "We just received a notice from the college."
"Oh? I was just about to talk to you about this." The professor approached, his face full of seriousness. He placed the folder in his hand on the table and beckoned them over. "Here is a new report about your experimental data. I hope you can read it carefully."
Gerling and Markles looked at each other, feeling a sense of uneasiness. They both knew that this might mean more challenges.
The professor opened the document and read it word by word, and found the problem. He frowned slightly: "There are some inconsistencies in your experimental data, especially the final result, which contradicts our initial hypothesis."
"We've noticed these problems, too." Gelling finally summoned up the courage to interrupt. "But that doesn't mean our research is worthless. On the contrary, if we re-examine it, we may find more interesting results."
The professor nodded, his eyes turning from stern to thoughtful. "This is a challenge, but also an opportunity. In the process of research, it is inevitable to encounter these obstacles. The key is whether you are willing to face them."
"I hope to redo the experiment and collect new data," Markles said enthusiastically, his eyes sparkling with hope. His voice was filled with unusual determination, "I believe this project still has great potential."
"Okay, I support you." The professor nodded slowly, his eyes full of trust and expectation. "Bring your plan and budget, and when everything is ready, give it to me. I will try my best to help you get more resources."
"Thank you, Professor!" Gerling was excited, and felt that half of the pressure seemed to be relieved. Their dreams were not to be denied, but to wait for new opportunities to come.
"Remember, the road of science is full of thorns, but every challenge is opening up new horizons for you." The professor looked at the two of them deeply as they left. "Stay curious and don't be afraid of failure."
