Chapter 39 Abnormal Fluctuation
Under the lights of the laboratory, Gerling had just captured some abnormal mental fluctuations from the subjects' EEG graphs a few hours ago, which ignited an inexplicable excitement in his heart.
"Have you noticed, Martha? The frequency of these fluctuations is not right." Gerling pointed at the screen with a fanatical gleam in his eyes.
Her white doctor's coat was a little dazzling under the light, but she didn't care. "Yes, I did notice it. But what exactly caused this fluctuation? Is it the subject's emotional fluctuations, or..."
"I'm not sure about this yet, but I feel that these fluctuations seem to be interacting with some unknown energy field," Gerling interrupted Martha and continued excitedly, "I think this may be related to our previous hypothesis."
"Energy field? Are you saying that those extraordinary mental fluctuations will cause such a reaction?" Martha looked doubtful. She put her hand on her chin and thought about Gerling's inference.
"That's right! I think some hidden places of the experimental subject are responding to external stimuli, and this reaction may reveal some unknown ability." There was a hint of firmness in Gerlin's voice.
Martha thought for a moment and replied, "But we have to be careful. Any kind of data may have an impact on the subject's mental state. I suggest that we temporarily stop the experiment and ensure her mental health."
"This is exactly what I need to discuss with you, Martha." Garlin's tone became gentler and his speech slowed down. He walked to a chair nearby and sat down, as if to organize his thoughts. "I believe this experiment can open a window for us to understand the deeper level of human consciousness, and this is just the beginning."
Martha shook her head. "But we can't sacrifice the health of the test subject, Gerling. No matter how mysterious these fluctuations are, we can't push her into the abyss of the unknown."
Gerling was silent for a moment, realizing that Martha was right. He had been pursuing scientific truth from the beginning, but sometimes the price of truth might be something we cannot afford. "I understand your concerns, but I also have my own persistence. We should discuss this issue together and try to find a compromise."
Martha nodded, her nervousness slightly relieved. "Then, can we redesign the experimental procedures to ensure her safety while obtaining the necessary data?"
"Of course." A smile appeared on Gelling's face. He stood up and walked around the laboratory, scanning the huge instruments and data recorders. He stopped, turned to Martha and said, "I think we can gradually guide the experimental subject to these fluctuations when she feels relaxed and safe."
"That sounds good." Martha smiled. "This will reduce the direct impact on her psychology. We can set up a gradual program and carefully guide her to adapt step by step."
"Yes, that's the method." Gerling nodded excitedly. His hand drew an arc in the air. "We can observe her reaction through relatively gentle stimulation and record the data of every fluctuation."
Graduate student Allen walked in, his face showing a hint of nervousness. "Gerlin, Martha, the subject seems a little uneasy, and just pressed the alarm hard. Should we go check on her?"
"Alan, can you describe her reaction to me quickly?" Martha immediately transformed into a doctor and asked directly.
"She...she seemed anxious, and kept repeating 'don't go there, don't go there.'" Alan twisted his fingers nervously. "I think she's terrified by the experiments we're doing."
Garlin frowned. "Fear is a normal reaction, especially when facing the unknown in an experiment. But we must go check on her immediately to make sure she is in good physical and mental condition."
Martha and Alan quickly followed Gerling's pace, and the three of them walked together to the observation room where the experimental subjects were located. The corridor of the laboratory was disinfected, and the cold atmosphere made people feel depressed. Suddenly, Alan stopped and said in a low voice: "Do you really think this experiment is safe?"
"Whether it's safe or not doesn't lie in the experiment itself, but in how we deal with it." Garling stopped and stared into Allen's eyes, as if conveying an invisible force. "Our responsibility is to explore these unknowns, not to be afraid of them."
Martha patted Alan's shoulder gently. "We will do our best to ensure the safety of the experimental subjects and obtain the most valuable data. Trust Gerling, he knows what he is doing."
"We're here, Maya," Gelling said quietly and gently, trying to ease her nerves. "Are you okay?"
"I..." Maya trembled slightly, her eyes full of fear. "I feel... there is something here, and it doesn't want me to go... I don't know what it is."
"It's a normal reaction, but we want to understand it." Martha stepped forward and tried to connect with Maya. "Can you tell us what you're feeling?"
"It's... deep in my mind." Maya closed her eyes, as if trying to recall. "It's like a dark shadow, always watching me."
"Dark shadow?" Gerlin repeated, and walked over to her side. His tone became gentler, "Don't be afraid, Maya. We won't let you go to any dangerous places. Tell us slowly what the shadow you feel is like."
Maya's breathing gradually calmed down, but she still clenched her hands tightly, as if trying to seek a sense of security. "It seemed to be laughing at me, telling me not to continue this experiment, but don't I want to know what I'm going through?"
Martha noticed Maya's changing mood and smiled, "You are brave, Maya. We are here, hoping to face this 'shadow' with you. Our intention is never to hurt you, but to help you."
"But I... I'm scared." Maya relaxed her stiff posture, tears flashing in her eyes. "I don't know if I will be swallowed by it. I want to escape."
"We will not let this happen," said Gerling firmly. "You are not alone. We will accompany you and help you face this 'shadow'. We will do it step by step so that you can explore these fluctuations in a safe environment."
