Chapter 23: Search and Rescue Mission

However, the good times did not last long.

At about three or four in the morning, a sudden earthquake completely broke the peace of the camp. Along with the sound of sirens outside the tent, the air around became unusually heavy.

"The monsters are starting to move!"

Someone suddenly shouted, and Xiangyu and other TPC staff members woke up from their sleep. Seeing the busy figures in front of them, they were at a loss for a moment.

Not long after, they heard the news that the second rescue team had lost contact. With heavy hearts, they began to work on the rescue mission.

The crowd was in chaos. After Xiangyu's third rescue team was equipped with a series of tools needed for rescue, they quickly moved towards the Gold and Silver Cave amid the urgent and hasty orders.

After the earthquake subsided for a while, the team arrived at the cave entrance. The continuous earthquakes had caused the cave entrance to collapse beyond recognition. The entrance originally dug out by the second rescue team was also blocked by the fallen rocks caused by the earthquake. They could only find another weaker place to dig a hole.

The captain of the rescue team was a middle-aged man in his forties. His many years of mountain rescue experience enabled him to quickly find a rock wall that was relatively easy to dig a hole.

Then, he quickly called a few people, and with the help of rock cutters and pickaxes, they quickly dug a hole in the collapsed rock wall. Perhaps to prevent the hole from being too large and causing another collapse, the entrance dug by the team was only large enough for one person to enter and exit, and they were not able to carry larger rescue tools.

There was no other choice, so the group had to take off the heavy rescue backpacks behind them and only carry flashlights, torches, engineer shovels, ropes, breathing masks and some life detectors.

Under the captain's arrangement, the whole team became well organized and soon went deep into the gold and silver cave.

The team leader was worried that something might happen to the three novice students, so he and Xiangyu formed a group of three, and the rest of the team members formed two groups, carefully searching for the missing team members in various branches of the Gold and Silver Cave.

The cave was pitch black, with fallen rocks everywhere. Sometimes the fallen rocks blocked the mine, and it took a lot of effort to move the heavy rocks to create a way out of the cave.

"Sometimes you have to not only pay attention to falling rocks overhead, but also pay attention to possible noises and traces around you."

The captain told them that these were most likely distress signals sent by the trapped people.

In this extremely tense and depressing atmosphere, Xiangyu and the other two felt as if a mountain was pressing down on their hearts, and they couldn't help but secretly admire these rescue workers.

Captain Laomou seemed to notice the fatigue on the three people's faces, so he spoke to ease the oppressive atmosphere. He smiled and said, "Why did you three run to such a dangerous place instead of staying in the base to train?"

Seeing the captain smile, Xiangyu also smiled a little more relaxed and said, "Let's do something meaningful."

"What do you mean by meaningful?" The captain said in a serious tone, with a hint of reprimand, "Love is precious, but life is more valuable. Young man, only living on is meaningful."

"What about you, uncle?" Xiangyu asked, "What's the point of doing such a dangerous job?"

"My meaning is..."

The captain fell into deep thought, a barely perceptible light flashing in his deep eyes. This was the first time he had been asked this question in all his years of rescue work.

“…In order to allow more people to survive.”

The four continued to walk deeper into the cave. As the torches went out, they realized that the oxygen in the cave was gradually becoming thinner, so they had to put on breathing masks and continue searching.

After a while, Luo Bingyang finally found a TPC staff member in the corner of a cave wall. He hurriedly called out, "Captain, there is someone here."

Upon hearing the news, everyone rushed over.

Judging from the equipment he was wearing, the captain recognized at a glance that this man was a search and rescue worker from the second rescue team, and now he had also become a person being rescued.

Seeing that his face was turning purple and there were no obvious injuries on his body, the captain concluded that he was suffering from lack of oxygen and hurriedly took out a new breathing mask and put it on the rescue worker's face.

The rescue worker seemed to be reborn, breathing in the endless stream of oxygen in the mask. After a few minutes, the purple and blue spots on his face finally faded away.

At the same time, new signals came from other groups:

"Captain, this is Team B, we found three trapped people..."

drop…

“…Captain, this is Team C, we have found five trapped personnel.”

The captain pressed the intercom, and his mature and steady voice made people feel comfortable: "Group B and Group C, you did a good job, send the personnel out quickly."

"clear…"

After hanging up the intercom, the captain approached the trapped rescuer and tried to ask: "What happened?"

"...monster...monster." He said weakly, his tone full of fear.

"How many of you have left?" the captain asked again.

The man shook his head and said sadly: "It's useless, they've all turned into stone..." As soon as he finished speaking, he actually cried out of self-blame, and his cry was filled with helplessness and despair.

Several people listened with heavy hearts, then the captain comforted him and let Luo Bingyang support him as he walked towards the cave entrance.

Before being helped away, he told Xiangyu and the others that it was dangerous down there and asked them not to go any further. After that, he turned around and left with Luo Bingyang.

Then, after walking a distance forward, the three found another trapped person. Judging from his clothes, he should be a member of the first survey team, but his condition was worse than the previous one and he was almost dying.

The captain quickly gave him a breathing mask and performed first aid, then asked Gu Yihui to carry him away.

At this time, news came from the walkie-talkie that other groups had returned safely. While encouraging them, the team leader said that the search was completed and they were ready to return, but his feet still walked towards the depths of the mine.

"Uncle, it looks like the mask won't last much longer." Xiangyu said after the captain hung up the intercom.

Unexpectedly, the captain walked straight into the depths without looking back and said, "Newcomer, you go out first. My mask can still hold for a while."

Xiangyu hurried over and said, "Uncle, the first group of players may have already..."

But before he could finish his words, the captain interrupted him: "I know--"

He stared at Xiangyu with a serious face and said, "If he's alive, I want to see him. If he's dead, I want to see his body. No matter what, I will do my best to give an explanation to their family..."

When the captain said this, his eyes were already wet. Xiangyu was also touched by the captain's words and decided to go deeper with the uncle to look for possible survivors.
