Chapter 23 I am Iron Man

Tony opened his eyes, and John Wierscher ambled towards him.

With one hand, he lifted him from the edge of the roof to the Mantic Heavy Drone.

When the drone closed the door, Jarvis finally regained the power of the armor.

"The electromagnetic pulse from the reactor explosion has no effect on your aircraft?!" Tony was surprised.

"You should say, I saved you again." John replied angrily, then turned on the drone's crystal ball system, overlooking the area that had been ravaged by the Iron Bully.

"Your aircraft is completely transparent with a honeycomb partition? Is it surrounded by screens? The cameras outside the honeycomb partition are not affected by electromagnetic pulses of this intensity?" Tony became more curious.

"You can say a few words less and keep your strength." John approached Tony with a speechless face, and began to disassemble Tony's deformed armor with his mind control.

Coulson pointed to the document. "That's what happened," he said. "Just read it word for word."

Tony scanned the files. "There's no mention of Stanley in it at all."

"It's been dealt with," Coulson said. "He's on vacation, and small planes are always unsafe. This isn't the first time I've dealt with something like this, Mr. Stark."

"Thank you for all your help, Agent Coulson," Pepper said.

"That's my role," Coulson said. "You'll still be in touch with us."

"Let's get started then," Tony said.

"You're not Iron Man," Pepper reminded him.

"I am," Tony said, wanting to argue with her.

Pepper shrugged. "Then it's up to you."

"You know, if I were Iron Man, I'd have a girlfriend who knew who I really was. She'd be scared all the time, because she'd be worried all the time that I'd die, but at the same time, she'd be worried that I'd be Proud of such a hero. She's going to be conflicted." He paused, looking into her face, before taking the stage for a press conference. "But it just made her love me more. Tell me you never thought about that night."

"What night?" Pepper asked, straightening his tie.

"You know."

"You mean the night? We danced and went up on the roof and then you went downstairs to get me a drink and you left me there by myself. You mean the night?"

Tony wanted to say something more, but Pepper Potts was the only person in the world who could silence him.

"Anything else, Mr. Stark?" she asked.

"No more," said Tony. "That's all, Miss Potts."

Pepper then led Tony into the conference room and introduced him to reporters from all over the country.

Rhodes was there too, staring at Tony sternly, as if asking him to read from the script. "Right now, Mr. Stark has prepared a statement," he said. "He will not be answering any questions from reporters. Thank you."

Tony walked to the podium. "It's been a while since I last saw you all," he said. "I think I'll just read from script this time."

There were bursts of laughter from the crowd.

"There's been speculation that I've been involved in the chain of events that happened earlier on the highway and on the roof," Tony began.

A reporter in the middle of the room interrupted him. "Sorry, Mister Stark, but do you really want us to believe that a bodyguard in a suit happened to be there? Actually, you..."

"I know it's a puzzling situation," Tony said, "but it's one thing to question the official narrative, and quite another to make some crazy accusations, or imply that I'm a superhero."

The reporter immediately fired back: "I never said you were a superhero."

"No? That's good, because it's wild and whimsical," said Tony, who knew he was a little out of his depth by now. "I'm obviously not superhero material."

Rhode leaned over to him and said, "Brother, just read it from the script."

Tony nodded and said, "Okay." He glanced at the script, then looked up at the waiting reporters and cameras.

Rhodes cast a stern look at him again.

Tony dropped the manuscript.

"The truth is..."

He said.

"I am Iron Man."

There was an uproar in the whole room.
